The story of “Yellow Sam”
Watch this documentary about one of the greatest ever horseracing gambles
This is a truly great watch, and I would urge you to spend a few minutes reliving the story of one of the game’s biggest names taking on, and beating, the old enemy (the bookmakers)…
Few figures make such captivating viewing as Barney Curley.
A non-conformist of the highest order. A disruptor. A firebrand.
From a time when the sport was populated by so many charismatic and larger-than-life operators who, more’s the pity, seem to have disappeared from the landscape these days.
So this is a story which salutes one of the best known figures of recent decades.
Enjoy…
Makes for good viewing doesn’t it? The type of gamble which we would love to orchestrate ourselves, or at least be a part of.
They did indeed break the mould when they made Barney Curley.
And who needs the hoop-la of a Royal Ascot or Cheltenham Festival? Often the best results, and biggest winners, come at tracks you’ve barely heard of.
Curley definitely etched the name of Bellewstown into racing folklore.
OPINION: As betting enthusiasts, we revel in the stories of others who pull off a great coup. Whether that’s a fictional story, or in this case something which happened in real-life. It not only entertains, but it energises us. Because if winning big can be done by someone else, it can also be done by us – can’t it? And characters such as Barney Curley, who are at the centre of a genuine inside gamble like Yellow Sam, give hope to us all.
