How everyone’s favourite broadcaster became a key figure in the legendary 1980’s “horsenapping”
 
I was looking at something on YouTube last night when my algorithm steered me towards this recent feature on Irish morning TV.

It related to a new documentary that’s been made about the IRA’s 1983 kidnapping (make that “horsenapping”) of the Derby winning racehorse, Shergar.

A story that has fascinated many for more than 40 years, as the Aga Khan’s £10m-rated Epsom Derby winner, and Irish Derby winner, was spirited away from his stables one night… never to be seen again.

Here Thommo (with slight Alan Partridge/Rowley Birkin QC overtones) talks us through the story, along with Irish racing journalist Donn McClean.

As they say about these things, fact is stranger than fiction.

And even now, more than four decades later, it’s a story that still captivates as a mystery that was never fully solved and leaves a raft of unanswered questions.

But a great horse and with all such tales of a career cut prematurely short… a case of what he might have been.
